A few women writers and aspiring writers decided in 1990 to form an organisation that would view and write issues of the day and the yester-year from a womens' perspective, and they called it the Zimbabwe Women Writers (ZWW). The primary objective of this organisation is to promote women's writings by means of providing writing skills, to publish women's writings, to disseminate information on literary activities to its members, to promote networking with gender related and other literacy organisations. This has a considerable impact in giving visibility to the ordinary woman writer as many women writers have now published in various media and are recognised by publishers. Since 1994, the members, and target group who are exclusively women, have published three anthologies in Shona, Ndebele, and English. Numerous other works have also been published, the most recent one being "Women of Resilience" which is a collection of recollections of women who participated in the war to liberate Zimbabwe. To date, ZWW has a membership of 56 branches with 600 members in both the rural and urban areas throughout the country. The motivation for Hivos' support is based on the fact that ZWW promotes women writers (who were hardly recognised in the male dominated arts) and contributes to the access to literature for the general public and school youth in Zimbabwe.
