Born in 1943 in Fad'jal (Senegal), Safi Faye was a teacher when Jean Rouch asked her to play in Petit à petit in 1971. She is the first African woman to start making films. In Paris, she studied cinema and ethnography and in 1972 made her first short film, La passante. In 1975, she made a feature film, Lettre paysanne (Kaddu Beykat), about the economic problems of the rural world. His second feature film, Fad'jal (1979), made in his hometown and awarded the 1975 George Sadoul Prize and many other awards, deals with the opposition between tradition and modernity. A graduate of the Ecole Normale de Rufisque (Senegal), she studied ethnology at the EHESS (Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris). In 1979 she holds a PhD in the religion of the Sérères. She studied cinema at the Louis Lumière school in 1979-1980. Safi Faye also works on international television programs, including Goob Na Nu (Harvest is Over) and Man Sa Yay (Me, Your Mother) (1979), Souls in the sun (1981) and Selbe and So many others (Selbé among many others) (1982). In 1997, she presented Mossane at the Fespaco shot ten years earlier and whose release was delayed by a painful conflict with its producer. She died on Wednesday, February 22, 2023 in Paris at the age of 80.
